As a winner of the ExcellenceS (PIA4) call for proposals and supported by the Occitanie Region, the ExposUM Institute will receive €46.4 million in funding over the 2022–2030 period. The initiative, led by the University of Montpellier and its partners, is part of an effort to explore the exposome.

With more than 350 researchers and 100 research institutions involved, ExposUM is a key player in addressing major public health and environmental challenges.

Structured around three key areas, the project has the following objectives:

  • Research focus: generating knowledge to better understand the combined and multiple impacts of environmental risks on human health.
  • Interface Focus: Applying knowledge; strengthening collaboration and fostering dialogue between science and society; promoting research findings among public, private, and nonprofit stakeholders.
  • Training Focus: Sharing and promoting knowledge to nurture a new generation of scientists through interdisciplinary and collaborative programs.

Understanding the Impact of Our Environment on Health

The exposome refers to the totality of environmental, social, and behavioral exposures to which an individual is subjected throughout their lifetime, from conception to the end of life.

It takes into account external factors such as pollution, diet, and living conditions, as well as internal factors such as metabolism and genetics, which interact to influence human health.

Exposome research aims to understand how these complex interactions contribute to the development and progression of both infectious and noncommunicable diseases.
