Call for Research Proposals – 2026 Campaign: Exposome and Behavior
| Publication of the call for proposals | October 15, 2024 |
| Theme | The topic selected by the ExposUM Institute for the 2025 Call for Proposals is:Anticipating exposomic health risks. |
| Funding Terms | For its 2025 edition, the ExposUM Institute has divided its AAP-R into two categories: Standard research projects: This category corresponds to the standard project format, which allows for funding for personnel4 and the operating funds necessary to produce original results that can be commercialized or published. Funding and duration limits:€250,000 over 2 years. Non-tenured researchers may submit a project in this category, provided they are already affiliated with the research institution under which the project is submitted. The allocated funds may then be used to cover the principal investigator’s salary5, if necessary, until the project’s scheduled completion. Exploratory research projects: These projects aim to initiate exploratory and original research, test hypotheses and approaches not favored by standard calls for proposals, and produce preliminary results in preparation for applications to more ambitious calls in a subsequent phase. Funding and duration limits:€50,000 over 2 years. Non-tenured researchers may submit a project in this category, provided they are already affiliated with the research institution under which the project is submitted; however, the allocated funds cannot be used to cover the principal investigator’s salary, whose contract must span the duration of the project. |
| Eligible expenses and total amount of the call for proposals | Eligible expenses include salaries for non-tenured staff (researchers, engineers, technicians, and assistants; doctoral contracts are excluded), as well as operating costs and minor equipment. Staff funded by the project may only be recruited from within the consortium’s research units6. For all eligible institutions, whether the UM is a co-sponsor or not, the employer of the recruited staff will be the UM. In the case of institutions without UM co-sponsorship, the funds necessary for recruitment will be retained by the UM to ensure recruitment (with some exceptions). The principal investigator must designate one of their institution’s co-sponsors as the administrator of non-personnel funds, after obtaining their agreement in principle. The total projected budget of the ExposUM Institute for this call is set at €2 million, with the goal of funding 7 standard projects and 7 exploratory projects7. |

| Theme | The topic selected by the ExposUM Institute for the 2025 Call for Proposals is:Anticipating exposomic health risks. |
| Funding Terms | For its 2025 edition, the ExposUM Institute has divided its AAP-R into two categories: Standard research projects: This category corresponds to the standard project format, which allows for funding for personnel5 and the operating funds necessary to produce original, exploitable, or publishable results. Funding and duration limits:€250,000 over 2 years. This year, non-tenured researchers may submit a project in this category, provided they are already affiliated with the research unit under which the project is submitted. The allocated funds may then be used to cover the principal investigator’s salary6, if necessary, until the project’s scheduled completion. | Publication of the call for proposals | November 9, 2023 |
| Theme | The theme chosen by the ExposUM Institute for the 2024 Call for Proposals is“The Exposome and Major Societal Challenges.” |
| Funding Terms | For its 2024 edition, the ExposUM Institute has divided its Research Call for Proposals intothree project categories: standard, support, and exploratory. A separate call for proposals will also be launched at a later date for the acquisition of research equipment to be installed at regional research platforms. As a general guideline, the plan is to fund 3 standard projects, 4 support projects, and 4 exploratory projects under this call for proposals, with a total budget of two million euros. |
| Eligibility criteria applicable to all three categories | Research projects must meet the following criteria: Theprincipal investigator must bea permanent or contract staff member affiliated with a research institution within the consortium and employed by one of the consortium partners. The project may have one or more partner institutions. However, only institutions included in the list of eligible institutions for this call may receive funding under the project. The project must aim to generate knowledge related to the exposome—i.e., anydeterminant of human health of environmental(including social)origin—and fall within the thematic scope of the current call for proposals. This alignment must be evident from the project summary. |

| Official opening | December 9, 2022 |
| AAP 2023 | The title of the ExposUM Institute’s 2023 Call for Proposals, proposed by its Research Guidance and Evaluation Committee (COER) and approved by its Scientific and Strategic Guidance Committee (COSS), is“The Emerging Exposome.” |
| Expenses and total amount | Funding must be explicitly justified by the project and must be limited to between €100,000 and €300,000 for a maximum duration of three years. Eligible expenses include salaries (for early-career researchers, research engineers, but not doctoral contracts, which will be funded through ExposUM via a separate mechanism), operating costs (note: laboratory “management fees” are not eligible), or equipment (with a limit of €10,000 for equipment). As these are ANR funds, they may only finance project-based staff (postdocs, ITAs) within the consortium’s research units. Partners outside the consortium may only receive funding through invoicing for services (the funds remaining under the management of the lead institution’s research unit). |

Call for Proposals for Regional Project Incubation (AIP) – 2024 Cycle: “Science-Society Interactions”
This call for proposals closed in June 2024.
This funding was intended to support the development of a transdisciplinary action-research proposal, meaning one that involves the academic sector and civil society actors, including associations, local governments, cooperatives, citizen groups, and government agencies such as the ARS, etc. Among the projects that received support through this call in 2024, two will be selected to receive more substantial funding in 2025 (a budget of €20,000 to €50,000 per project). For example, in 2024, two projects are being supported by ExposUM: one focuses on characterizing and raising awareness of the risks of tick-borne diseases in Occitanie, and the other on eco-citizen institutes for monitoring and understanding pollution, as well as the establishment of an institute in the Aude department.
