A Look Back at the First 2025 Edition of the ExposUM Seminar

On Tuesday, January 23, 2025, the ExposUM Institute kicked off the year with the first installment of its ongoing seminar series: How do the Pasteur Institutes integrate the humanities and social sciences into their network, and what role is given to the science-society interface?

A cross-disciplinary approach to contemporary issues.

Held in person at the Salle Caryatide at MSH-SUD in Montpellier, as well as via videoconference on Teams, this session brought together three researchers with interdisciplinary backgrounds, showcasing the innovative integration of the humanities and social sciences (HSS) into the field of biological sciences.

  • Cyrine Bouabid, a biologist and postdoctoral researcher at the Pasteur Institute of Madagascar, has been committed to integrating the social and human sciences (SHS) since her doctoral thesis. She presented the Alliance SHS Afrique project, which aims to strengthen the capacity to respond to epidemic crises through the SHS. She also co-founded the Pasteur Network’s SHS network in Africa, fostering collaboration among African institutes.
  • Meriem Belghith, an immunologist at the Pasteur Institute in Tunis, provided details on the initiatives of the Tunis Science Shop.
  • François Bontems, a researcher in structural biology, took an innovative approach by highlighting the role of science fiction in rethinking the relationship between science and society, thereby opening up new avenues for dialogue.

The session also explored the evolving relationship between science and society, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and collaborations in addressing contemporary challenges.
